How to Build a Business People Don't Want to Leave
Free guide: how to build a business people don’t want to leave
by Chrissie Whittingham, founder of Yoga Social Club
What normal classes leave out
I went to a yoga class looking for exactly what half of us are quietly looking for: connection to the people around me. I didn't find it. You roll your mat out next to a stranger, do the class, roll it back up, and leave. Nothing in the format leaves room for anyone to actually meet, even though half the room is probably dealing with something real, a breakup, a new baby, a brutal year.
I felt that gap because I was standing in it, newly moved to a suburb and needing exactly what that class should have given me and didn't: people. So I built the thing I'd gone looking for. One class, and a coffee after it. I didn't set out to build a yoga brand. I set out to fix a problem I had myself, and the fix had nothing to do with yoga.
Retention is emotional, not transactional
Most businesses spend all their energy on the thing they sell, the class, the product, the session, and stop thinking the moment it's over. But the thing that decides whether someone comes back isn't the quality of that hour. It's whether they felt like a person in the room, not a customer moving through it.
People don't stay because the product is good. Good gets them in the door once. People stay because they feel known, because someone remembers their name, their week, their new baby, because there's a reason to come back that isn't the thing you're selling, it's the people you'll see when you do.
Wellness without connection is just fitness. A business without connection is just a series of transactions, waiting for a cheaper competitor.
What I actually did
None of this is theory. It's what I built, on purpose, class by class.
I added the bit after the class. The coffee wasn't an add-on, it was the actual product. The yoga was the reason people showed up. The conversation after it was the reason they came back.
I built the model around relationships, not just delivery. Every person who runs a Yoga Social Club is trained to find the right venue, build a relationship with the people who run it, learn their local community, and stay in the room after the mats are away. The yoga is table stakes.
I let word of mouth do the growing. No ad spend, because people weren't just coming for the yoga, they were coming for each other. So they brought their mates, unprompted.
What it built
Yoga Social Club is now 30+ communities across the UK, built in twelve months, without spending a penny on advertising. That's not a claim about marketing. It's what happens when retention works.
If this is you
Whatever you sell, ask yourself the only question that matters: why would anyone come back? Not was it good. Good is the minimum.
If you teach yoga or work in wellness, that's a Yoga Social Club licence.
If you run a small business, I run strategy days with small businesses and founders on exactly this. If you run something bigger, this becomes a longer engagement, and I speak on it too.
Either way, email COMMUNITY to hello@yogasocialclub.com and I'll come back to you with how we could work together.
